Whether you are building a retaining wall, laying a patio, or using them for commercial applications, selecting the right stone is an essential part of the process. Choosing the right stone for your project is very important and can make all the difference to the overall outcome and finish.Ìý

With the variety of stones available, it can be difficult to know which one is best for your project. That’s why, we at 91±¬ÁÏ have created this guide to provide you with an overview of the different types of stones, their crush strength, and how to choose the right one for your project.Ìý

With a little knowledge, you’ll be able to choose the right stone for your project and create a beautiful, long-lasting outdoor space or structure.

Considerations when Choosing the Right Stones

As a building material, stones are one of the oldest, dating back more than 10,000 years. It is also one of the most versatile materials, with a wide range of different types of stone available.Ìý

Understanding the various types of stones and their crush strength is key in selecting the right one. The type of stone you choose will depend on a number of factors, including where you plan to use it and the type of project you’re working on. Below we have provided some of the key things you should consider before choosing your materials.

  • Consider how the stone will be used. Is it for a patio? A pathway? A fire pit? Knowing how the stone will be used will help you determine which type of stone will be best.

  • Which Stone do you or your client like the most aesthetically?

  • Before you choose the stone for your project, you’ll want to consider your budget, and how much will it cost you or your client.

  • Of course, you’ll also want to make sure you choose a stone that is appropriate for the project. You don’t want to end up with a beautiful stone only to find out it breaks halfway through.

  • Knowing the stone’s crush strength as well as its other properties will help you find the right stone for your project, as the higher the crush strength the more likely it will not break when fitting your project.

  • You’ll want to consider the stone’s durability, as you will want to make sure the stone is durable enough for your project. Granite, for example, is a very durable stone, making it ideal for countertops, walkways, and landscaping.Ìý

Let’s go through some of the main types of stones on the market today.Ìý

    • Granite is a popular stone for countertops, fireplaces, and landscaping. It is typically used for kitchens and bathrooms as it has a lovely finish.Ìý

    • Limestone is commonly used for pathways and patios as it is a durable material which holds up well in all weather.Ìý

    • Gabbro is a great stone for commercial application as it is the cheapest and most durable on the market. However, the finish is not as aesthetically pleasing as others on our list.Ìý

    • Slate is a soft stone that is mostly used for roofing or tiling on homes.Ìý

Understanding stone crush strength

The crush strength of a stone is the amount of pressure it can withstand before breaking. This is measured in psi (pounds per square inch), with a higher psi meaning the stone can withstand higher pressure.Ìý

The amount of pressure a stone can withstand depends on the type of stone and where it is being used.Ìý

Granite, for example, has a higher crush strength than limestone, meaning that granite can withstand more pressure than limestone. This is why considering your stone’s crush strength is important for your project as, for example, using limestone on a pathway may be more susceptible to damage from foot traffic than granite would be.

Stones with the highest crush strengthÌý

So, which stone has the highest crushing strength?

  • Gabbro: 9 psi – Gabbro is a dense but overlooked stone, that is typically used in pathways and walkways. It is not as aesthetically pleasing as some of the other stones, but it makes for a good, durable stone that is perfect for commercial building works. Ìý

  • Granite: 6-7 psi – Granite is a dense stone and has a high level of resistance to heat, making it ideal for countertops, fireplaces, and outdoor fire pits. It is a more expensive stone, but it does make for a beautiful addition to your outdoor space. Ìý

  • Limestone: 3-4 psi – Limestone is also commonly used for patios and pathways. It is a softer stone and is typically less expensive than granite. While it is naturally resistant to water, you’ll want to seal it to prevent staining. Ìý

  • Slate: 3-4 psi – Slate is a soft stone and is used primarily for roofing and decorative projects. It is not ideal for walkways or patios, but it can make a great addition to your outdoor living space.

How to Crush StonesÌý

Want to know how to get a commercial quantity of stones crushed and sorted? Then you need to look into crusher screening. Crusher screening is a process that involves using a crusher to break down rocks into smaller pieces and is an integral part of the stone-crushing process.

It can be used to produce aggregate or other construction materials such as gravel, sand, and rocks for your projects. This process can be used to produce a variety of different products, depending on the size and type of rock being crushed.Ìý

The first step in the crusher screening process is to select the appropriate crusher. This will depend on the type of rock to be crushed, such as hard or soft stones, and the desired size of the resulting aggregate or product.Ìý

Generally, there are two types of crushers used for crushing stones:Ìý

  • Jaw crushers work by squeezing the rocks between two plates. Find out more about Jaw Crushers here.Ìý

  • Impact crushers use a hammer to break up the material.Ìý

Once the type of crusher has been selected, the next step is to determine the size of the crusher. The size of the crusher will depend on the size of the stones to be crushed and the desired output. Looking for the perfect size crusher for your project, contact us today.Ìý

Ìý

How Crusher Screening WorksÌý

Generally, crusher screens are used to further reduce the size of the stones. This is done by passing the stones through a series of screens with different sizes and shapes. The stones that are too large or too small will not pass through the screens and will be discarded.Ìý

The stones are fed into the crusher, this can be done manually or mechanically. If done manually, the stones must be placed into the crusher one by one. If done mechanically, the stones will be fed into the crusher using a feeder and conveyor belt. Once the stones have been fed into the crusher, it will then be turned on and the crushing process will begin.Ìý

The crushed stones will need to be screened again to ensure all of the desired sizes are delivered. This can be done by passing the stones through the same series of screens as before. Once the stones have been sorted and the desired sizes are present, the stones can then be used for aggregate, gravel, sand, and other products.Ìý

Crusher screening is an integral part of the stone-crushing process and is an important step that should not be overlooked.

We hope you have found this guide helpful, if you would like more information on crushed stones, aggregates or contract crusher screening, please see the resources below or contact us today.Ìý

The majority of people lack a thorough understanding of construction materials that work outside the trade. It’s easy to believe that only professionals have any knowledge of them and their uses.

Ìý

This is particularly true when it comes to stone, one of the most fundamental building elements. We can all recognise a stone when we see one, and we all know how significant stones are in building, but what precise roles do stones play in various construction projects?

Ìý

Here at Tynes Tees Crushing, we want you to feel empowered with a wealth of knowledge before handling one of our Crushers. In this blog post, we will go further into the various kinds of crushed stone, their production processes, and their fundamental uses.Ìý

Ìý

The stone-crushing process

Using a stone crusher in a quarry or other location with an abundance of huge rocks is the first step. Although there are many different kinds of crushers, all of them have the same primary purpose: to reduce bigger rocks to smaller fragments for use as construction material.

Ìý

Then, several screeners are used to sort and store the crushed stone into various heaps according to size. Larger stones are first eliminated during the screening process, followed by medium-sized stones, and finally stone dust.

Ìý

Because contractors need extremely precise kinds of crushed stone to finish various projects, screening is crucial. For instance, large stones should not be used in ready-mix concrete or stone dust should not be used in drainage systems.

Ìý

At Tynes Tees Crushing we believe that careful planning is required to satisfy customers because each contract may call for a variety of rocks, bricks, or other materials to be crushed and screened. Because selecting the incorrect equipment could prohibit the task from being finished or even started, we pay special attention to your demands and our clients’ requirements.Ìý

Ìý

To read more about our screening and crushing processes click here.Ìý

Ìý

The stone is finally prepared for shipment from the quarry after being divided into various piles according to size.Ìý

Ìý

Crushed Stone UsesÌý

Ìý
  • Used as a base or sub-base material in paving blocks and concrete for sidewalks, driveways, patios, homes, office buildings, and paved roadways, as well as during the production of cement.

Ìý
  • Asphalt and tarmac are created by mixing gravel with a binder and are commonly used as driveway extenders and fillers. Because of their angular designs, the stones used in the Macadam method of road construction must interlock in order for the road to be strong.

Ìý

  • In walls for the construction of railroads and shorelines, a binding substance is occasionally utilised. Crushed stone, also known as rip rap or shot rock, is used in a variety of shoreline structures to prevent erosion from water or ice.Ìý

Ìý
  • Crushed stones can be placed on the ground as tracking pads on building sites and in landscaping around trees and drains. Temporary roads called tracking pads are used to stop construction-related silt from going on paved public roads or landscaping.

Ìý
  • Crushed stones can be used for self-contained sewage treatment systems and septic systems.

Ìý
  • Stones can also be used to cleanse acid water and other harmful pollutants like sulphur oxide and coal dust found in mines.

Ìý
  • Crushed stones can also be used to make agricultural lime, which is then used to treat soil to lessen acidity.

Ìý
  • Did you know that crushed stones can also be used as mineral and grit for feeding chickens? All varieties of poultry need a mineral diet for optimum digestion.

Selecting the incorrect equipment is something we want to avoid as it could prohibit the task from being finished or even started.

So the question is, how do we select the right Crusher Machinery?Ìý

You may also be wondering what our most popular crusher is, or even what a crusher does? Keep reading to find out more.

What does a Crusher do?

In its simplest terms, a crusher is a device that presses solid materials into smaller pieces. A rock crusher is a piece of equipment used to break down huge boulders into smaller rocks, gravel, or rock dust. Crushers are considered slow-moving equipment used to coarsely reduce massive amounts of solids.

Our job is to carefully select the correct crusher to satisfy customers because each contract may call for a variety of rocks, bricks, or other materials to be crushed and screened.

We want to visit your site as all our machinery is selected for your project based on the precise specifications. This is so we can ensure that the right size and type of machinery is functional for your specified needs.Ìý

On Tuesday 11th of August we received a urgent call from Cleveland Potash in need of a crusher and screen hire due to breakdown of their own crusher.

We quickly arranged to meet the next day to assess the site and what needed to be done. We quickly realised that our Terex Finlay 1170AS crusher would be ideal for their requirements. We then went through the costings as the client wanted to run the crusher at 24 hrs per day 7 days a week.

Once all of that was done the client order the crusher and screen to be ran for 60 days constantly. Two days later the Crusher was delivered to the site and setup before work could begin.

The crusher began work on the 15-08-2020 and worked almost none stop meet the clients demands and goals. The crusher eventually was stopped on the 23-11-2020. The clients demands were met and the crusher had worked extremely well to get through the backlog from their broken-down crusher.

Boulby Mine

As part of the same operation we supplied a RM70GO Crusher to Crush the oversized salt as they had a similar breakdown with their Crusher at Boulby Mine.
